Montauk announced itself before the ceremony did: a blue fishing boat stenciled with the town's name, ropes coiled on the dock. Back at Sole East, a simple gown hung on a white door, silver flats waited on a blue cushion, and the groomsmen lined up in grey suits along the patio. The bride stood in soft window light with her hair pinned low, looking calm.

The aisle was a green tunnel of bamboo that opened onto the lawn, with a keyboard player tucked under the trees. An older man in grey gave her a long hug at the front, and the officiant in a black robe read from a small booklet while she held steady eye contact with her groom. They kissed with the bamboo framing them like a doorway, then came back up the lawn grinning in black and white.

Afternoon on the grass felt like a backyard party, lacrosse stick included. Escort cards sat in trays of wheatgrass, the cake was stacked in cream tiers, and a row of kids in blazers and sundresses sang from lyric sheets while 2 grown-ups played guitar and ukulele.
