Karla & Carlos

Pink smoke and blue smoke, rolling across the lawn while the whole wedding party ran at the camera. That frame sums up Karla and Carlos's day at Cascade, and it came right after a ceremony under the white pergola, framed by clipped hedges, potted palms and a flower garland overhead. The invitation called it a Friday afternoon in April, and the grounds looked it, with purple azaleas in full bloom against the stone walls.

The morning belonged to the women in her life. Karla sat in a white robe on a sofa packed with family in pink and navy satin, and the laughter in that room never really let up. An older woman in navy buttoned up the back of her gown by a sunny window. Carlos got a hand with his tie from a groomsman, then waited in his navy three-piece suit. Later, a little girl in coral stopped Karla on the path for a hand to hold.

Portraits moved from the azaleas to the rock waterfall and then to the front steps under the Cascade sign, where the two of them raised small glasses together. Inside, the sweetheart table sat in front of a blush backdrop with a garland of pink and red roses. A paper-flower wall stood over a dessert table covered in trays of sweets. By the end of the night, Karla was in the middle of a crowd of women with both arms in the air.
