Caroline & Zachary

Sunflowers set the palette before anyone was dressed: a ring box tucked into a bloom, white sneakers laced for later, and a bouquet of orange roses and sunflowers waiting by the invitation. Caroline stood at a tall window in a white robe with her name stitched on the back, while her bridesmaids lounged on a couch in floral pajamas. Zachary's crew wore plaid gray suits with green ties and a wild spread of novelty socks, which they were very happy to show off on the lawn.

The sky stayed a flat, soft grey all afternoon, which let the fall color in the gardens do the talking. Red sumac and bronze shrubs lined the paths, and the first dog came down the aisle on a braided leash with petals scattering around his paws. They exchanged vows at the top of the stone stairs, reading from folded pages into a vintage microphone. One groomsman had to turn away and wipe his eyes, and when they kissed, the crowd on the terrace below broke into cheers.

Afterward Zachary's groomsmen swallowed Caroline in a group hug outside the clubhouse, and both dogs got their turn in portraits on the patio. A yellow sports car with a black hood pulled up in the gravel lot for a few frames, parked under the clubhouse cupola. Inside, the reception room glowed amber under hanging greenery. They danced close for their first song, fed each other cake next to a drip-frosted tier, and then Caroline was out on the floor with one arm straight up.
